HXD1

In short

Locomotive originally ordered as DJ4. Developed by Siemens in cooperation with Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works. All are assembled in China by ZELW. These locomotives haul very heavy coal trains and were renamed HXD1 just before commercial service. In commercial service since 2007.

A half HXD1 is a development of the Siemens ES64F1 for 25 kV 50 Hz, with only a single driver's cab. The continuous power rating is lower – 4.8 MW instead of 6.4 MW – and the body is shorter: the distance between bogie pivots is reduced from 9900 mm to 9000 mm. The roof is about 20 cm higher than that of the DB 152 body. Two machines are permanently coupled back-to-back. The HXD1 is a member of the fourth generation of EuroSprinter: the converters are built with IGBT and not with GTO as in the first three generations. Only the body looks like the second generation. Each nose-suspended asynchronous motor is driven by a separate IGBT frequency converter. After an upgrade of the railway infrastructure, these machines could be ballasted up to 200 t to reach a 760 kN starting effort. The third batch received newly designed cabs and inverters developed and built by CSR. CSR Ziyang built #6001 in 2012 under Zhuzhou design. CSR Zhuzhou built #7001–7002 in 2013 with modern cabs and a cabless Bo′Bo′ middle unit: three Bo′Bo′ units totalling 14 400 kW, delivered to Shenhua Mining Group. Shenhua Mining Group also ordered 8 eight-axle locomotives (2 × Bo′Bo′) in 2013.
